Field trip to Smestow Valley Nature Reserve-Wolverhampton

Field trip to Smestow Valley Nature Reserve-Wolverhampton
Tettenhall Old Railway Station by Mac Wright

Sunday, 25 January 2015

Another lovely morning, although a bit chilly, saw twenty-one of us gather at the old Smestow Station (Cupcake Lane) car-park in Meadow View Terrace, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton.
The Smestow Valley Nature Reserve runs from Tettenhall to Compton and straddles the disused railway line, the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and Smestow Brook which run alongside each other in this section.
At one point, on the canal towpath one of the bargees has built a bird feeding station and we lingered opposite here for a while, being rewarded with excellent views here of several greenfinch, a pair of bullfinch, seven magpies and various other tits, a song thrush, sparrows and other garden birds while gulls circled overhead.
Nearby a badger had dug a massive sett entrance, spreading its excavated soil across the towpath.
As we walked westwards along the towpath some of the group saw nuthatch, greater spotted woodpecker and kingfisher. Further on the lovely male kingfisher gave everybody really good views and even ventured to give us all a demonstration of its fishing techniques, taking its catch back to the same perch and swallowing it.
A good morning`s birding was completed by a cracking choice of refreshments at the Cupcake Lane Cafe which now operates from the old Smestow Station building and by sitting outside we were surrounded by bird song as we rested.
